This is the day that the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it! |
November 17, 2008 Newsletter November is Attitude of Gratitude month in our class!
This week’s news: • I cannot thank my students enough for their tender prayers and support this week, as I needed prayer for my family in regards to one of our 20-year-old, furry, feline, family members that left our care and entered into God’s care on Saturday. Without my students’ tender-hearted prayers, kindness, and understanding I could have not made it through the day on Friday. I truly have a loving compassionate class for which I am very grateful!
• Please be sure to make note of the upcoming Redeemer dates from the Checkpoints and the main website! Our musical will require two dates set aside on December 2nd and the 5th.
• The week of November 24th will be no school. May God richly bless you and your family as we celebrate our gratitude for all He has done in our lives. I know this year you all will be high on my list for which I am thankful. God has done so many amazing things in our class this year as we have grown together as a precious class family. The students are maturing so quickly, and daily see their hearts grow toward God and one another.
• A big thanks to our 8th grade class for coming into our room on Monday and giving the students a wonderful introduction to the solar system. Kudos to you all! 8th graders are out of this world!
• Book Adventure: Your child can now earn points for reading and quizzing a huge selection of great books on www.bookadventure.com I have assigned your child a user name and password which I have made into a bookmark for them. After signing onto the website, they can search for books on the book list link by title, author, ISBN number, reading level, and category. There is also a downloadable link for a booklist that can be reviewed by you so that they can borrow books from either the Redeemer or public library on which they can quiz and earn points. I am so excited to see they point totals rise as their reading skills rocket!
• Scholastic Book Fair: Wow! I am overwhelmed with humble gratitude to the many families that so graciously purchased gifts from the book fair to add to our growing class library. I received computer programs and holiday book treasures to share with the students in the upcoming weeks ahead. A huge thank you to all for your giving hearts and hands.
• Treasure box: Thank you to all the families that contributed to our treasure box this week! The children were surprised on Friday as if it were Christmas morning. Their awesome behavior definitely is worthy of a Friday treat, as they work so diligently all week on their academic and social skills.
• Cubbies: The office has purchased some cubbies for our room. Question: Is there anyone that would have any extra time on their hands to put the two units together for the class?
• Water bottles: Please make sure your child has a water bottle every day. They can keep them at school during the week (rinsing and refreshing them daily), and take them home on the weekend to be washed and returned on Monday.
• Math homework update: In order to supply the students with plenty of addition fact practice, the curriculum will have the students completing a fact practice skills sheet in addition to a regular homework sheet. Math homework will continue on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Some of our focus skills for the week are: Identifying the Even Numbers to 20 Identifying and Locating Numbers on a Hundred Number Chart Counting Dimes and Pennies Creating a Design with a Line of Symmetry Identifying a Line of Symmetry
• Language arts: Please continue to check your child’s planner for the nights when he or she will have a phonics story to read. Our stories for this week are The Fire and Luke’s Flute.
Some of our reading skills for the week include: Recall facts and details. Identify fanciful elements in the story. Recognize contrasts in the story. Recall and infer story details. Evaluate a character’s response. Relate story content to personal experiences. Relate story content to biblical truth: Faithfulness is rewarded. Infer a character’s emotions by his actions. Recall story details. Infer ideas not explicitly stated. Demonstrate an understanding of the usefulness of helicopters to many professions.
Some of our new phonics skills for the week include: Participate in a discussion about a hymn writer. Distinguish between several long vowels. Match Phonics Characters with letters in words. Recognize the Phonics Characters The Bad Cats. Add a suffix to words that end with silent e. Add a suffix to a word ending in a consonant. Identify long and short vowel sounds. Write long and short vowels with a macron and breve. Decode words with suffixes. Identify the number of syllables in words. Discuss deafness. Read names of the days of the week. Recognize that the days of the week are always capitalized.
Spelling: The students will write their spelling words into their planners on Monday and need to write their words 3X each Monday nights for homework. They are also to choose one word to illustrate and write a caption for their illustration using the spelling word they chose. Our spelling words for this week are a review: ax, bath, bring, chat, crab, drank, drum, glass, must, splash
• Bible: Some of our lesson truths are: We should make vows to God. When you dishonestly trick others, the Lord may allow you to be tricked also. Some of our Scriptures on which we will be focusing are: narration of the Bible story of Rachel and Leah Genesis 28:10-22 Hebrews 13:5b
• Science: We will be completing our study of how God made the sun, moon, and stars (day four Creation) this week, and also include a brief study of the outer and inner planets.
• History and Geography to come the second semester.
• Homework is usually given on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays with math on all three days, phonics stories on two days (Tuesday and Thursday starting this week), and spelling on Monday (only students with words missed on Thursday’s pretest will have to write their missed words on Thursday night).
• Planners: Thank you for continuing to sign your child’s planner daily. This is an easy way for us to communicate about homework and the daily progress, praise reports or simple questions concerning what is going on in our classroom.
• Thank you families for all your contributions to our class in prayer, time, and contributions. Our class family continues to grow in the knowledge of His Word, His Spirit, and love, kindness, and understanding for one another. Thank you for your prayer for our class. God continues to be so faithful to us as we grow spiritually, academically, emotionally, intellectually, and socially as a class family. Praise be to God for His never-ending love, grace, mercy, and provision towards us. I pray that He allows us to be a light to our local community of His love and the knowledge of His Word, and the move of His Spirit.
Kindest regards, Mrs. Rudacille
