PRE SCHOOL CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

Pre-Kindergarten, 3 year olds
A thematic approach is used to integrate all areas of learning. Students pace themselves and choose areas of particular interest in activity centers designed to introduce new concepts and reinforce skills.

At this time we have only one Pre-Kindergarten 3 class. We have one teacher and an aide that rotates between K3, K4, and K5 each day to assist the lead teacher. Currently we have 13 students enrolled, with a split from some students who attend 5 days a week and some that attend Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Our class is a self-contained class. Subjects that are provided are as follows: Bible, Phonics, Numbers and Skills, Art, and Music. Each subject is integrated each day, with Tuesday and Thursday being enrichment days.

Chapel is provided once every two weeks and is integrated with K4 and K5, which helps to build a community together. A hands on approach is used to implement the developmental curriculum. Parent-teacher relationships are fostered through parent volunteers providing additional resources and assistance in the classroom. Teachers and students follow the "I-Care" guidelines for positive behavior. Students go on field trips for community exposure and curriculum enrichment.

Pre-Kindergarten, 4 year olds
A thematic approach is used to integrate all areas of learning. Students pace themselves and choose areas of particular interest in activity centers designed to introduce new concepts and reinforce skills.

Special area teachers in music, art, Spanish, physical education, computer, and media plan activities to enhance classroom instruction during their regularly scheduled time with the students.

The teachers accommodate different developmental levels of students by giving attention to individual and group instruction. The resource teachers in art, Spanish, physical education, music, computer, and media provide activities that extend and enrich the curriculum. Professionals are invited to the classroom to share their particular area of expertise. Teachers and students follow the "I-Care" guidelines for positive behavior. Students go on field trips for community exposure and curriculum enrichment. Students are taught community responsibility through participation in various service projects. The classroom is equipped with a computer, headphones, and keyboard.

Kindergarten, 5 year olds
The Kindergarten uses the Advanced ABEKA phonics program. Literature is supplemented through Bob Jones curriculum, our Core Knowledge program, and thematic units. Emphasis is put upon reading for enjoyment and our program covers several read-aloud chapter books throught the year. Handwriting is taught using the Concerned Communications Composition as the central focus and in the second semester using Write Reflections. This writing method is continued throughout first through fifth grades at Redeemer.

The mathematics curriculum is the Saxon Kindergarten Series, which includes manipulatives and assessments. Additional manipulative and teacher-made materials are also utilized.

Core Knowledge curriculum covers literature, history, geography, science, music and art in our K5 program. Topics of study are included in "What Your Kindergartner Needs to Know" by E.D. Hirsch. Thematic units are also integrated to reflect holidays as well as student interest. Academic and developmental progress is evaluated by observation, by student performance, and by a national normed-reference test in the spring.

Chapel is provided every other week. Resource teachers are available in music, art, Spanish, computer, physical education, and media center.
