Different Gifts, Same God

“Measure twice, cut once.” This old adage is helpful when building something, and is one I apparently didn’t fully grasp growing up. When it comes to building decks or fixing air conditioners, I am far better at breaking things than at repairing them. To say the least, I am unskilled in the construction/maintenance arts. So when, this week, while out walking the campus, I came across Melbourne Facey working on the railing and deck for the 3rd grade modulars, I found myself envious of his ability to quickly, properly and effectively replace all of the rotted wood with new wood while incorporating the new pieces into the existing structure. What’s more, he completed this job in a matter of hours, about as long as I would have taken to break a tool or two and hurt myself. 😣

As I stood talking with Melbourne, I mentioned being jealous of his skill. He looked at me and said with a big smile, “We all have gifts, just not all the same gifts.” What a wonderful reminder of the way God’s people are joined together. The Apostle Paul details this reality in one of his letters (I Corinthians 12) as he compares the church (all who follow Jesus as Savior and Lord) to a body with many parts. The ear hears, the eye sees, the foot allows for travel, etc… Each has its function (read: gift) and no part can flourish independent of the rest of the parts. He paints a beautiful picture not only of God’s pleasure to bestow gifts on His children, but in the fact that He gave differing gifts in part so that we would depend on one another and be able to help and bless each other.

As January begins and we think of the New Year ahead, it may be helpful and healthy to recognize your own gifts while also celebrating the gifts of those around you. Every day, we get to marvel at God’s goodness to every student as we see the giftings He has given them. Further, we also get the opportunity to help them cultivate their gifts for use in the service of God and of their fellow humans. As you travel this road, may God richly bless you with a deep gratitude for and many opportunities to serve through your gifts.
